The Advanced search option allows the user to construct a query based on the structure of the ontology of the local branch. The query can then be sent to the current branch or submitted to all branches (see cross branch search). The Results of the Search are then displayed.

Advanced Search

An Advanced Search provides a form for exploring attributes and relationships within the Ontology. For each object, you can Search Attributes that describe that object or you can #Search Relationships Search Relationships that the object forms with other objects in the branch. As with Browsing, the search can be submitted to the current Branch or to all branches.

Search Attributes

You can Search Attribute to find an object with a particular attribute value. In this example, we will find a Neuron with the attribute Nerve Projection and a value of PdN2. For the definitions of such attributes, see the Ontology.

  • Step 1: Select the attribute of the object from the scrolling list below the object. Multiple attributes can be selected by holding down the CNTRL key while selecting.
  • Step 2: Hit the Add button to add that attribute to the search.
  • Note that this will refresh the screen and add Query Criteria at the bottom. You may need to scroll down to see them.

  • Step 3: Enter the value of the Attribute that you are searching for.
    • If the Attribute is a category, then choose the value of that attribute from the pull-down list (as shown below).
    • If the Attribute is a numerical value, then choose the operation <, >, = and type the numeric value in the box that says Numeric Only!.
    • If the Attribute value is a text string, then choose the operation equals, starts with, ends with, or contains.
  • Step 4: Hit the Submit button to query the current Branch or hit the Submit to All Branches Button to perform a Cross Branch Search.

  • Checking the Definitional Box adds the further restriction to the search that this value of the attribute is listed as defining the object being searched.
  • Clicking the R button will remove that value.

Search Relationships

You can Search Attributes to find an object with a relationship to particular other objects. These other objects can also have particular attribute values. ...more coming soon.
